Shota Takagi

Painter · Fukuoka
Thousand Dots 1 — a square painting, a dense field of thousands of small white and gray hand-painted dots on black, in a pale wood frame on a white wall.
Thousand Dots 1 · 2026

Ten thousand dots,
no two alike.

Statement

Shota Takagi paints in dots. Each mark is placed by hand, one after another, until the surface is full — thousands of small forms, no two alike. From a distance they gather into a single shifting field, drifting into slow vortices; up close, every dot has its own character, its own weather.

Each painting is a microcosm: a cluster of cells seen through glass, a swarm, a field of stars, all at once. Takagi is less concerned with what the dots depict than with how they are looked at. The work asks for slow, sustained attention — a quiet, almost meditative act of seeing, in which the eye rests on one form, then the next, and the mind follows.

His palette moves between the near-monochrome and fuller color, but the dot — repeated, accumulated, never identical — stays the constant.

At close range the field breaks into separate marks — rings, cells, pairs, clusters. No two dots are painted the same way.

The same hand and the same mark, opened out into color — the dots radiate from a bright center into a ragged, living edge.
